8V Golf Cart Battery
8V exists to fit a 48V pack into a tray that was built for six blocks.
This is the 8V branch of the golf cart battery set: which carts use 8V, how the packs are laid out, and what you give up compared with 6V.

Why 8V packs exist at all
It is a tray-size solution. Six 8V blocks make 48V in roughly the space four 12V blocks would need, with more plate area.
Six blocks instead of eight
A 48V flooded pack is normally eight 6V blocks. Switching to 8V gets the same voltage from six, which drops two batteries' worth of weight and two sets of interconnects. On a cart with a fixed tray and a weight limit, that is the whole argument.
You give up some cycle life for the space saving
Fewer, larger blocks mean slightly higher current density per plate than an equivalent 6V string. In practice an 8V pack lasts a little less long than a comparable 6V pack under the same duty. For a cart doing two rounds a day that is a real cost; for weekend use it is not.
The 8V questions that actually get asked
Charging and buying dominate, and both have a trap in them.
An 8V string needs an 8V-aware charger
Six 8V blocks in series is 48V, so the charger must be set for a 48V pack with the right absorption voltage for the block count. Owners often reuse a charger set for eight 6V blocks; the voltage target is the same but the equalise stage is not. Check the profile, not just the plug.
Retail 8V stock is thinner than 6V
Warehouse clubs and auto chains carry far fewer 8V deep-cycle blocks than 6V, and the ones they do carry are often special order. That matters when a block fails mid-season and you need a replacement in a day. Plan the spare before you commit to an 8V pack.
The four things that decide an 8V pack
Tray dimensions
The only reason to pick 8V is that six blocks fit where eight do not. Measure the tray before anything else.
Block count and voltage
Six 8V blocks make 48V. Four make 32V, which is not a cart voltage, so a partial pack is not an option.
Plate thickness of the specific part
GC8 blocks vary. The deep-cycle version lasts years longer than a dual-purpose one at a similar price.
Replacement availability where the cart lives
If nobody within a day's drive stocks 8V deep-cycle blocks, a mid-season failure costs more than the saving.
Questions people ask before they buy
What is an 8V golf cart battery used for?
It builds a 48V pack from six blocks instead of eight, which saves tray space and around 40kg of weight. It is common in carts whose battery compartment was designed around six blocks, and in retrofits where the original 6V tray will not take the extra length.
Does Costco sell 8V golf cart batteries?
Availability varies by warehouse and is often special order rather than shelf stock. Where they do carry them, the block is a flooded GC8 pattern. For a fleet, confirm that a replacement can be obtained within a day before standardising on 8V.
How do I charge six 8V batteries?
Treat the string as a single 48V pack. Use a charger with a 48V lead-acid profile and set the absorption and equalise voltages for the block count. Do not reuse a charger configured for a different number of cells without checking its profile.
How long do 8V golf cart batteries last?
Typically three to five years on seasonal use, slightly less than an equivalent 6V pack because the plates carry more current per unit area. Watering discipline moves that figure by more than any brand difference.
Is 8V better than 6V for a golf cart?
8V wins on space and weight, 6V wins on cycle life. If the tray forces the choice, take the 8V. If you have room for eight 6V blocks and the cart runs daily, the 6V pack will usually outlast it.
