Golf Cart Battery Maintenance

Almost all golf cart battery maintenance is about water, and almost everyone gets the timing wrong.

This is the maintenance page of the golf cart battery set: when to water, what water to use, how to desulfate, and how to store a pack over winter without destroying it.

  • 14 articles covering watering, cleaning, winterising and desulfation

Three routes through maintenance

Water and clean, store it properly, or try to recover a pack that has already suffered.

02

Storage and winterising

What to do before a cart sits for months, and what state to leave the pack in.

03

Routine and recovery

The periodic schedule, installation practice, and desulfation when it is already too late.

The watering rules, in order

Four rules. Getting the order wrong is what causes most of the damage attributed to bad batteries.

Water after charging, never before

Electrolyte expands during charging, so filling first pushes acid out through the caps. Charge, let the pack settle, then top up to about a quarter inch above the plates. In summer this is every two to three weeks; in winter, barely at all.

Distilled only, and bottled water is not distilled

Mineral content is what kills cells over time. Tap water and most bottled drinking water carry calcium and magnesium that deposit on the plates. Only distilled or deionised water belongs in a flooded pack, and the cost difference is trivial against a set of blocks.

Storage and recovery

A cart that sits is at more risk than a cart that runs. And once a pack has sulfated, recovery is partial at best.

Charge before storage, then top up monthly

A flooded pack stored discharged sulfates within weeks. Charge fully, water to the correct level, disconnect the pack or fit a maintainer, and top up every month or two. Leaving it connected to a proper float charger is the simplest version of this.

Desulfation recovers some capacity, not all

A long slow charge with an equalising cycle can break down light sulfation and restore part of the capacity. Heavier crystal growth is permanent. Epsom salt treatments raise the reading by altering the electrolyte and destroy the plates in the process, so they are not a repair.

The four maintenance tasks that actually matter

01

Water at the right time and level

After charging, to a quarter inch above the plates, distilled only. This one task accounts for most of the difference between a five-year pack and a two-year pack.

02

Keep terminals clean and tight

Corrosion and loose connections turn current into heat. Melted posts are a maintenance failure, not a battery failure.

03

Charge before storing

A discharged pack left for a season sulfates. Lithium is the opposite: store it around half charge, not full.

04

Equalise on a schedule

Flooded packs need a periodic equalise charge to bring cells back into balance. Skipping it lets one weak cell set the whole pack's ceiling.

Questions people ask before they buy

When should I add water to golf cart batteries?

After charging, never before. Charging expands the electrolyte, so filling first pushes acid out through the caps. Charge the pack, let it settle, then add distilled water to about a quarter inch above the plates. In summer that is every two to three weeks.

Can I use bottled water in my golf cart batteries?

No. Bottled drinking water usually contains calcium and magnesium that deposit on the plates and shorten pack life. Only distilled or deionised water should go into a flooded battery, and the cost difference is small against the price of a set.

How do I store golf cart batteries for winter?

Charge the pack fully, top up the water after charging, clean the terminals, and then either disconnect the pack or leave it on a proper float charger and check it monthly. A flooded pack stored discharged sulfates within weeks and may not recover.

How do I desulfate a golf cart battery?

A long slow charge with a controlled equalising stage can break down light sulfation and restore part of the capacity. Beyond that, heavily crystallised plates are permanently damaged. Epsom salt treatments raise the voltage reading by contaminating the electrolyte and destroy the plates.

Which battery terminal should I disconnect first?

The negative terminal first, and reconnect it last. On a series string, disconnecting the main negative removes the return path, so a spanner touching the chassis cannot complete a circuit. Photograph the layout before you start so reassembly is unambiguous.

Ask us to write your maintenance schedule

Send the pack chemistry, voltage, climate and how often the cart runs. We will give you a watering and equalising schedule by season, and tell you what to change for long storage periods.
