Golf Cart Battery Lifespan

A golf cart battery does not have a lifespan. It has a lifespan under a particular habit, and the habit moves the answer by years.

This is the lifespan page of the golf cart battery set: how long each chemistry actually lasts, what shortens it, and how to read a manufacturer's claim honestly.

Ask which pack lasts longest

The numbers, stated plainly

Four chemistries, four very different answers. The spread is wider than the price difference.

Flooded three to five years, LiFePO4 eight to twelve

A flooded pack under seasonal recreational use reaches replacement age in three to five years, and in a hot climate often in three. A LiFePO4 pack on the same duty runs 3,000 to 6,000 full cycles, which for a cart doing 150 rounds a year is more than a decade. AGM sits between the two at four to six years.

Six volts lasts longer than twelve, at the same chemistry

Six 6V blocks in a 36V string spread the current across more plate area than three 12V blocks of the same amp-hours, so they run cooler and corrode more slowly. The gap is usually one to two years. It is the least-known reason fleets still buy 6V blocks.

What moves the number

None of the published figures survive bad habits. These four variables decide which end of the range you land on.

Depth of discharge and heat

Running a flooded pack to empty every round costs years off its life; keeping it above 50% roughly doubles the cycle count. Heat accelerates every ageing reaction, so a pack in a Florida cart barn rarely sees its fifth summer. Cool and shallow beats premium and abused.

Storage behaviour is where packs quietly die

A cart parked for winter with a discharged pack sulfates, and a flooded pack that also dries out may not recover. Charge first, water the plates, then top up every month or two. This single routine is the difference between a five-year pack and a two-year pack.

The four numbers behind every lifespan claim

01

Cycles, not years

Manufacturers quote cycle life at a stated depth of discharge. Halve the depth and you roughly double the cycles, which is where the wide ranges come from.

02

Ambient temperature

Every 8 to 10°C above 25°C roughly halves the life of a lead-acid pack. This dominates climate, not brand.

03

How deep you discharge

50% depth on flooded is the practical limit before damage starts. Lithium tolerates 80 to 90% routinely.

04

Charging discipline

Undercharging sulfates a flooded pack; charging a lithium pack below freezing damages it permanently. Both are habit problems, not product problems.

Questions people ask before they buy

How long do golf cart batteries last?

Flooded lead-acid three to five years, AGM four to six, and lithium LiFePO4 eight to twelve on recreational use. In hot climates flooded packs often fail at three years, and a fleet running daily rounds at full depth can be shorter still.

How long does a golf cart battery last on one charge?

A 48V flooded pack of about 170Ah delivers roughly two to three hours of continuous driving, or about 30 to 40km, which is two rounds with two players. A 48V 100Ah lithium pack gives similar range but holds it until nearly empty instead of sagging through the round.

How long do 48V lithium golf cart batteries last?

Between 3,000 and 6,000 full cycles, which for a cart doing 150 rounds a year is well over a decade. Store them around half charge, avoid charging below freezing, and the pack will usually outlast the cart.

Can I extend the life of my existing pack?

Partly. Charge after every use, keep a flooded pack watered to a quarter inch above the plates, never leave it discharged, and avoid running below 50%. Reconditioning can recover lightly sulfated packs but cannot reverse physical plate damage.

Do Trojan batteries last longer than cheaper blocks?

Usually yes, by six months to two years in daily service, because of thicker plates and tighter manufacturing tolerance. In a low-use cart the difference is smaller, because the block reaches its calendar age before its cycle limit.
