Lithium Golf Cart Battery

Lithium changes the whole cart system, not only the battery chemistry.

Use this guide to judge voltage, usable capacity, charger and BMS compatibility before comparing price. It routes every decision into the article that answers it in depth.

What actually changes after the swap

Most of the benefit people attribute to lithium is really the effect of removing lead-acid's voltage sag. The rest is maintenance.

The cart feels stronger because the voltage stops sagging

A flooded pack drops several volts under acceleration and keeps falling as it discharges, so the cart gets slower through the round. A lithium pack holds close to nominal voltage until it is nearly empty. Same motor, same controller, noticeably more consistent torque on the last hole.

Maintenance does not disappear, it changes shape

No watering, no terminal cleaning, no equalising. In exchange you get a battery management system that has to stay awake, a charger that must match the cell count, and a low-temperature rule: do not charge below freezing. Winter storage means charging to about 60% and leaving it, not topping it up every fortnight.

The swap that goes wrong

Almost every failed lithium conversion we get asked about traces back to the charger or the BMS, not the cells.

Keeping the old lead-acid charger

A flooded charger runs an equalising phase around 2.6 volts per cell and will keep pushing after a lithium pack is full. Depending on the BMS, that ends in a mid-round shutdown or a chronically overcharged pack. A lithium conversion without a lithium charger is not a conversion.

Ignoring what the BMS is rated for

A lifted cart with a 400A controller will ask for far more current than a 100A BMS will pass. The symptom looks like a battery fault: the cart cuts out under load, then runs fine again after a few seconds. Match the BMS to the controller's peak draw before anything else.

The four things that decide how long a lithium pack lasts

01

Where you keep the state of charge

Long spells at full or flat both cost cycles. A pack stored around half charge ages far slower than one parked on the charger every night.

02

Charge and discharge temperature

Charging below freezing is the one genuinely destructive habit. Storage in a hot shed shortens life as well, just more gradually.

03

How hard the pack is worked

A pack running at a fraction of its current rating lasts far longer than one that sees its ceiling every round. Oversizing on current is cheap insurance.

04

How well the BMS balances the cells

A weak balancer lets one cell drift, and the weakest cell sets the pack's cut-off. Balance quality shows up in year four, not month one.

Questions people ask before they buy

Is a lithium golf cart battery worth the price?

If the cart does more than about 50 rounds a year, usually yes. A lithium pack costs two to three times a flooded set up front, gives roughly double the usable capacity and lasts several times as many cycles. Below that usage the payback stretches out and flooded stays rational.

Can I convert my existing golf cart to lithium?

In most cases yes, without changing the motor. You replace the pack, the charger and usually the battery tray, and you confirm the controller's voltage range. Older resistor carts need the controller and solenoid changed too, which is where conversions get expensive.

Do I still need to water or maintain a lithium pack?

No watering, no equalising and no terminal cleaning routine. What you do need is a charger matched to the cell count, ventilation around the pack, and a habit of not charging the cart below freezing or leaving it at 100% for months.

How long does a lithium golf cart battery last?

Between 3,000 and 6,000 full cycles depending on chemistry, depth of discharge and temperature. For a cart doing 150 rounds a year that is well past a decade. The pack usually outlives the cart's second set of tires and often the cart itself.

Will lithium void my cart's warranty?

It depends on the cart maker and the year. Many modern carts are sold with lithium options and accept a swap. Some older warranties require a dealer-installed pack. Check the cart's warranty terms before you cut anything, not after.

Send us the cart and we will quote the conversion

We need the cart make and model, the current voltage and pack layout, the controller rating, and whether the cart is lifted or tows. We will come back with a pack, a BMS rating and a charger.
