What should OEM buyers verify when ordering custom 21700 battery packs?

Talk / Battery Q&A
A tool brand wants 5,000 custom 21700 packs for a new product and is choosing a pack maker based on samples.
Direct answer: Fix five things in writing before production: the exact cell model and its datasheet, the pack specification including BMS limits, the test documents the pack will have (at minimum a UN38.3 test summary for transport, plus the safety standards your market expects), an approved golden sample, and an incoming inspection plan. Without these, the production pack can quietly differ from the sample.
Cell model. Name the cell, not just ‘21700’. Redway’s 21700 cell page lists INR21700-40T (4,000 mAh, 10C continuous), 40MF (4,000 mAh, 3C), 33M (3,300 mAh, 5C), 45P (4,500 mAh, 3C) and 48D (4,800 mAh, 3C). A change of cell model or maker after approval should require your written consent.
Pack specification. Series and parallel configuration, nominal and maximum voltage, capacity at a stated discharge rate, continuous and peak current, BMS over-current, over-voltage, under-voltage and temperature limits, balancing method, sleep current, connector, wire gauge, enclosure and IP rating, label content and dimensions with tolerances.
Cell grading. Ask how cells are matched within a pack, for example by capacity and internal resistance, and what tolerance is used. Ask for the grading data on samples.
Documents. UN38.3 testing applies to each battery design type for transport; a pack design change can require new testing. Depending on the product and market, buyers commonly ask for IEC 62133-2 (portable equipment), IEC 62619 (industrial) or UL 2271 (light electric vehicles). Keep supplier statements general until you have seen the reports; see documents to request with an order.
Samples and approval. Test samples in your product at the hottest and coldest expected conditions and at peak load, then seal and keep a golden sample. See sample order and test plan.
Inspection. Agree an incoming check: open-circuit voltage, internal resistance, label, dimensions, and a capacity test on a sample from each lot. Redway also offers finished power bank and e-bike battery designs; the same checks apply.
Process. For the overall OEM steps, see how an OEM/ODM battery project runs.
Change control and traceability. Ask for a lot or serial number on every pack that links to cell lot, BMS firmware version and production date. Agree that any change to cells, BMS hardware or firmware, welding method or enclosure material is notified in advance and re-approved with new samples, because a pack that looks identical can behave differently. Keep the approved specification, golden sample and test reports together so warranty discussions refer to the same baseline.

Put the cell model, change-control clause and document list in the purchase contract, not just in emails.
↳ Replying to Procurement perspective
Validate BMS limits against your product’s peak current and temperature range, and confirm the design-type UN38.3 report covers the exact pack.
↳ Replying to Selection/Engineering perspective
Inspect each lot on arrival against the golden sample, and keep records by lot number for traceability.

Verify before ordering: Cell datasheets, grading data and test reports are not on the site; request them from Redway for the chosen cell and pack design.
