Buyer question

A boat owner has a Group 24 battery tray with a strap and wants to swap the lead-acid battery for a 12V 100Ah lithium battery.

Main answer

Direct answer: Possibly, but only one of Redway’s three 12V 100Ah versions is listed as Group 24 size. The standard 12V 100Ah page lists 260 × 168 × 210 mm and ‘BCI Group 24 size’. The EU thin-size and Ultra versions are 395 × 110 × 286 mm and 502 × 187 × 242 mm, which will not fit a Group 24 tray. Measure your tray, strap, terminal clearance and lid height before ordering, and confirm dimensions with Redway.

Page figures. 12V 100Ah (self-heating, OEM): 260 × 168 × 210 mm, about 10 kg, M8 terminals, IP65, BCI Group 24 size. 12V 100Ah EU thin size: 395 × 110 × 286 mm, 9 kg. 12V 100Ah Ultra: 502 × 187 × 242 mm, about 13 kg. The capacity is the same; the boxes are not.

Why check even the Group 24 model. BCI group numbers describe a size class, and trays, hold-downs and lids vary. Fitting 100Ah of LiFePO4 into a Group 24 case is compact for this capacity, so ask Redway to confirm the dimensions and the terminal position for the unit you will receive.

How to measure. Measure the tray’s inside length and width, the height to any lid, hatch or overhead obstruction, and the strap or clamp type. Note where the positive and negative cables reach and whether the terminal layout matches. Allow for cable lugs and terminal covers above the case.

Weight and securing. At about 10 kg the lithium battery is lighter than many lead-acid batteries of the same size, but it still needs a hold-down so it cannot move in waves or on rough roads. Our post on mounting and securing a lithium battery covers restraint and location.

Other checks. Check the charging sources for a lithium profile (charge to 14.6V maximum listed), the battery’s continuous current against your loads, and whether the battery replaces a starting battery; the page lists no cranking (CCA) rating, so do not use it for engine starting without Redway’s confirmation. For narrow spaces, see where the EU thin-size battery fits.

Terminal orientation. Group-size batteries come with terminals in different positions. If the positive and negative are swapped compared with the old battery, the cables may not reach or may cross, so check before you order.

Compare the tray’s inside dimensions, height limit and terminal position with 260 × 168 × 210 mm, then add lug and cover clearance.

Verify before ordering: Redway’s 12V 100Ah page lists ‘BCI Group 24 size’; confirm dimensions, terminal layout and version with Redway before ordering.
