How do you specify a lithium forklift battery for cold storage or freezer work?

A food distributor runs reach and counterbalance trucks between a -25°C freezer and a dock at about 5°C, and is replacing lead-acid with lithium.
Direct answer: Write the temperatures into the specification and match them to the battery’s published limits. Redway’s 48V forklift pages list charging from 0°C to 55°C and discharging from -20°C to 60°C, so a battery cannot be charged in the freezer and a -25°C room is below the listed discharge range. Ask Redway in writing whether a cold-storage version, insulation or heating is available, plan charging in a warmer area, and manage condensation when trucks move between zones.
Page figures. The 48V 400Ah (51.2V 420Ah), 48V 550Ah (51.2V 560Ah) and 48V 280Ah pages all list charge 0°C to 55°C, discharge -20°C to 60°C, storage 5°C to 35°C and IP54. The 420Ah page’s FAQ says capacity falls in extreme cold but gives no test conditions. Self-heating is not listed on these forklift pages, so do not assume it.
Duty profile. Record how long each truck spends in the freezer per trip and per shift, the coldest room temperature, and where it parks between shifts. A truck that works short trips into the freezer and returns to a 5°C dock behaves differently from one that stays inside for hours.
Charging. Charge only within the 0°C to 55°C range, in a designated charging area, as OSHA 1910.178(g) requires for charging installations in the United States. If the battery is cold from the freezer, the BMS may block or limit charging until it warms. Opportunity charging on the dock must allow for that; see opportunity charging on multi-shift work.
Condensation. When a cold battery and truck move into warmer, humid air, water can condense on and inside the compartment. IP54 means protection against dust and splashing water, not against standing condensation. Ask Redway how long a battery should acclimatise before charging, and keep connectors and vents dry.
What to put in the specification. List room temperatures, time in each zone, shift pattern and charging location; ask for the charge and discharge temperature limits in writing for the exact model, any cold-storage option and its effect on warranty. Compare energy with the truck’s needs using sizing from lead-acid Ah.
Charging layout. Put chargers in a dry area above 0°C near the freezer door, so trucks can charge between runs without long trips, and keep cables and connectors off wet floors.
↳ Replying to Redway Battery Editorial Team
Ask for temperature limits and any cold-storage option in writing with the quote, and check how the warranty treats freezer use.
↳ Replying to Procurement perspective
Match freezer and dock temperatures to the 0°C–55°C charge and -20°C discharge limits, and plan where and when batteries charge.
↳ Replying to Selection/Engineering perspective
Check connectors and the compartment for condensation after cold-to-warm moves, and log any low-temperature alarms from the BMS.

Verify before ordering: Cold-storage options, low-temperature behaviour and warranty terms for freezer duty are not published; request them from Redway for the exact model.
