Buyer question

A resort wants lithium batteries for utility carts that tow trailers of turf equipment and carry tools up hills all day.

Main answer

Direct answer: Size for the duty, not the brochure range. Measure or estimate continuous and peak current under tow or full cargo, choose a pack whose continuous and peak ratings cover that load with margin, then pick capacity (kWh) for the longest shift including hills and accessories. Confirm tray size and cable/fuse ratings. Towing and cargo raise amp draw far above an empty passenger cart, so undersized packs run hot and cut out early.

Current before kilowatt-hours. Towing and hills raise motor current. A pack sold for light golf rounds may hit BMS current limits when a trailer is attached. Prefer models positioned for higher current, such as the 48V 160Ah (S51160P) (about 8.19 kWh), or move up in capacity so voltage sag stays smaller under the same load. Log amp draw on a representative loaded climb if you can.

Energy for the shift. Estimate amp-hours or kWh from a typical day: loaded runs, idle accessories, and reserve. The 72V 100Ah lists about 7.68 kWh; the 48V 200Ah long size (S51200B) lists 10.24 kWh at 51.2V. Higher voltage carts at the same Ah use less current for the same power, which helps cable heating; see 72V utility-cart sizing and estimating energy per round.

Tray and form factor. Long-size 200Ah packs need a matching tray; short versus long bodies are not drop-in equals. Measure first; see short vs long 48V 200Ah and tray measurement. Operating temperature ranges on these golf-cart pages are commonly listed around -20°C to 65°C; still keep packs out of sealed hot trays without airflow.

Cables, fuse and controller. Higher sustained current needs correctly sized cable and a main fuse matched to the pack and controller; see fuse and cable sizing. Controllers also have continuous limits—do not expect the battery alone to fix an undersized controller.

Heat checks. After a loaded climb, check cable lugs and review BMS temperature alarms. Repeated high-temperature warnings mean the duty exceeds the pack or the cabling. Accessories add load too; see accessory load and runtime.

Procurement tip. Ask for continuous and peak discharge ratings in writing, plus recommended charger current for opportunity charging between runs. Do not invent load figures—use the cart OEM limits and your own amp-clamp or logging data where possible.

Commissioning. After install, run the heaviest tow route once with a full charge and record end SOC, peak current alarms and any voltage-drop events under acceleration; see voltage drop under acceleration.

Verify continuous and peak current, tray dimensions and fuse size against the cart and trailer combination.

Verify before ordering: Continuous and peak current limits and tray dimensions are model-specific; confirm the exact ratings with Redway for the pack you order.
