How do you wire four 12V lithium batteries into a 24V bank (2S2P) safely?

A boat owner has four identical 12V lithium batteries and wants a 24V house bank for a 24V inverter without buying new packs.
Direct answer: A 2S2P bank means two series pairs, those pairs paralleled, for 24V nominal at twice one battery’s capacity. Only attempt it if the manufacturer allows series connection of that model (for example many 12V 100Ah pages list a maximum series count), all four batteries are the same model and age, and you use balanced busbars and correct fusing. For new builds, a single 24V 200Ah is usually simpler and safer than building 24V from four 12V units.
Series permission. Check the datasheet for max series and max parallel. If series is limited to one or not allowed, stop and buy a native 24V battery. Parallel-only packs must not be series-stacked.
Topology. Build two series strings of two batteries each, bring both string positives to one busbar and both string negatives to another, with equal cable lengths. Fuse each string. Do not create accidental short paths while landing the series jumper.
Match first. Equalise SOC and resting voltage on all four before final paralleling of the strings. Large mismatches drive equalising currents through the bus. Capacity choice between 12V and 24V platforms is also discussed in 12V vs 24V for off-grid cabins.
BMS behaviour. Each 12V BMS protects its own pack. In series, one BMS opening takes down that string. Communication to a 24V inverter is harder with four separate 12V BMS units than with one 24V battery.
Current and cable. Size cables and fuses for the inverter continuous and surge current at 24V. A 12V 200Ah used in 2S2P yields a 24V bank with about 400Ah parallel capacity only if all four are 200Ah and correctly paralleled—verify arithmetic and ratings before ordering inverters.
Marine practice. On boats, follow applicable standards such as ABYC E-13 for lithium systems: disconnects, overcurrent protection and secure mounting.
When to prefer one 24V battery. New installs, closed-loop CAN/RS485 needs, or any case where the 12V model forbids series. Sizing of house loads still follows the same energy maths as in bank sizing for daily load.
Verification. After wiring, check string voltages are nearly equal under light charge and discharge before releasing the system. Recheck torque on series jumpers after the first week of vibration in a van or boat, and keep a simple diagram of which battery is in which string for future service.

Measure per-string voltages under load after commissioning to catch imbalance early.

Verify before ordering: Series and parallel limits differ by model; confirm on the Redway datasheet and follow marine or vehicle standards that apply to your install.
