How does an OEM or ODM custom battery project usually run, step by step?

Talk / Battery Q&A
An equipment maker wants a custom 48V pack with its own enclosure, connector and branding, and asks how such a project usually runs from first enquiry to production.
Direct answer: Most custom battery projects follow the same stages: a written requirement, a quotation with assumptions, design review, samples, testing and certification, a pilot batch, then production and after-sales support. Each supplier runs them differently, so treat the steps below as the questions to ask, and get timings, minimum order quantity, any engineering or tooling charges and responsibilities in writing at the start.
1. Requirement. Write down voltage, capacity, continuous and peak current with durations, charge method, operating and storage temperatures, size and weight limits, mounting, connectors, communication, display and labelling, plus the target market. Redway’s product pages list OEM/ODM options and many optional upgrades (for example Bluetooth, CAN-bus and self-heating on the 48V 100Ah golf cart pack); a standard model close to your need may shorten the project.
2. Quotation. Ask what the price includes: cells, BMS, enclosure, tooling, testing, certification, packaging and freight terms. Ask for the minimum order quantity, lead time per stage and what happens if the specification changes.
3. Design review. Review drawings, the BMS specification and protection settings, and the wiring of connectors before samples are built. Agree who approves changes.
4. Samples and testing. Agree what the samples must pass and how you will test them; see sample order and test plan. Lithium batteries must pass UN 38.3 tests before shipping; industrial products may also need IEC 62619 or market-specific listings. Ask who pays for and owns the reports.
5. Pilot and production. A pilot batch checks that production matches the samples. Agree incoming inspection criteria, serial-number traceability and the documents shipped with each order; see documents to request with an order.
6. Support. Agree warranty terms, spare parts, firmware updates, failure analysis and who handles field service. Products such as the PM-LV51100-3U rack module and 48V 400Ah forklift pack show the kind of warranty and monitoring details to agree for a custom pack. For browsing standard modules, see the lithium battery module range.
Timeline and change control. Write the stages into a simple schedule with an approval point at the end of each one, and keep a change log. Changing cells, the BMS or the enclosure after samples are approved usually means repeating some tests, which adds time and cost. Ask the supplier which changes would trigger a re-test before you request them.
↳ Replying to Redway Battery Editorial Team
Get MOQ, engineering or tooling charges, lead time per stage and change-order terms in writing before samples; surprises usually appear at those points.
↳ Replying to Procurement perspective
Freeze the requirement, review the BMS settings and drawings, and define sample tests and certification responsibilities before any build.
↳ Replying to Selection/Engineering perspective
Agree how serial numbers, firmware versions and service records will be handed over, so field support works from day one of production.

Verify before ordering: Redway’s own OEM/ODM process, MOQ, charges and lead times are not published in detail; request them for your project.
