Buyer question

A buyer evaluating forklift, rack and 12V packs has been sent PDF certificates and wants to verify them before paying a deposit.

Main answer

Direct answer: Treat certificates as claims until verified: match the legal certificate holder to the factory or brand, confirm the exact models or cell types on the certificate cover your products, check issue and expiry or surveillance dates, and look the file number up in the issuer’s public directory when one exists. Ask for documents available on request rather than relying on logo strips on a marketing page. Keep a controlled register of what you accepted for each SKU such as the 48V 300Ah forklift, 51.2V 100Ah rack or 12V 100Ah, and refuse to pay a deposit on large orders until at least one critical certificate has cleared this check.

Holder and address. The certified organisation name should match the manufacturer or a named factory on your contract. A certificate issued to an unrelated trading company with no factory link is a warning sign.

Scope. Read the model list, voltage, capacity and standards named (for example industrial battery safety standards such as IEC 62619, or UL categories where applicable). A certificate for a small consumer pack does not cover a forklift battery.

Directory lookup. For UL marks, search the file number in UL Product iQ. For IEC work, ask for the national certification body’s reference and verify with that body. Do not trust only a scanned stamp.

UN38.3 and transport. Test summaries should identify the cell or battery model tested; see checking UN38.3 documents.

Dates and revisions. Note issue date, expiry or audit dates, and whether the PDF is complete (schedules and model annexes included). Cropped first pages are incomplete evidence.

What not to do. Do not assert product certifications from brochure icons alone. Prefer the phrase documents available on request until files are verified. Marketing claims are not the same as a traceable certificate. Edited screenshots, missing annex pages or certificates that list only cells while you are buying a complete pack all need follow-up questions.

Cell versus pack. A cell certificate does not automatically cover the finished battery with its BMS, wiring and enclosure. Ask which standard applies to the pack you are purchasing and whether the test report model string matches the nameplate.

Procurement gate. Make certificate verification a milestone before deposit on custom or large fleet orders. The same discipline you use when checking inverter compatibility applies to paperwork.

Register. Store verified PDFs with SKU, supplier, file number and review date so renewals are tracked. When a factory or BMS revision changes, request updated documents rather than assuming last year’s file still applies.

Read the model annex; verify the standard and ratings cover the forklift, rack or 12V product you are buying.

Verify before ordering: Do not treat this article as confirmation of any Redway certification; request current documents for the exact models on your order and verify them with the issuing body.
