How does heat in summer docks or foundries affect a lithium forklift battery?

Talk / Battery Q&A
A metals plant runs 80V and 48V lithium forklifts near furnaces in summer and has seen charge sessions stop early with high-temperature warnings.
Direct answer: High ambient temperature plus charge and discharge heat push cells toward BMS temperature limits. Chargers may taper or stop, discharge current may be derated, and repeated high-temperature operation shortens life even when the pack still works. Specify the real ambient range when ordering, keep charging out of the hottest zone where practical, watch temperature logs, and confirm charge and discharge windows with Redway—published derating curves are often incomplete on public pages.
What heat does. LiFePO4 packs manage heat through the BMS. When sensors climb, the BMS can reduce allowable charge or discharge current or open contactors. Opportunity charging right after a heavy lift in a hot aisle stacks ambient and I²R heating. Models such as the 80V 400Ah-class (about 34.94 kWh) list substantial continuous discharge (about 300A on the product text) and peak current; those currents create heat that must leave the case.
Published windows are not a free pass. The 72V 300Ah page lists discharge around -20°C to 60°C and charge around 0°C to 55°C, with about 150A maximum continuous charge/discharge. The 48V 420Ah-class lists roughly 21.5 kWh and about 200A maximum continuous charge. Site air near a foundry door can exceed those charge limits even when the rest of the warehouse feels fine.
Charging location. Prefer a cooler charging bay with airflow. Avoid enclosing the pack against radiant heat sources. Confirm lithium charger profiles and communication so the charger respects BMS temperature flags; see charger requirements.
Contrast with cold sites. Cold storage needs different limits and sometimes heaters; see cold-storage specification. Hot and cold problems both show up first in temperature logs, not in amp-hour ratings.
Maintenance checks. Review weekly temperature maxima from the display or cloud monitoring where fitted (several Redway forklift pages list RS485, CAN and 4G options). Investigate packs that run hotter than sister trucks on the same route—connector resistance and blocked vents are common causes.
Procurement. State maximum ambient, radiant exposure, and whether trucks stage next to ovens or sunny docks. Ask for recommended charge current in that ambient rather than only the nameplate maximum.
If alarms persist. Reduce charge current, add dwell time before plugging in, improve bay ventilation, or relocate charging. Do not bypass temperature protection.

Write maximum ambient and charging-bay conditions into the RFQ so the quoted pack and charger match the site.

Compare BMS temperature limits and charge windows against measured dock or foundry air temperatures, not office readings.
↳ Replying to Selection/Engineering perspective
Trend pack temperature and charge-stop events weekly; rising peaks often precede nuisance shutdowns.

Verify before ordering: Exact temperature cut-offs and derating behaviour are model-specific and often not fully published; confirm with Redway engineering for the delivered pack.
