Talk / Battery Q&A

Buyer question

A distribution centre is writing the after-sales annex for a 20-pack lithium forklift fleet and wants fewer unplanned downtimes than it had with lead-acid watering failures.

Main answer

Direct answer: Include defined response and repair times, a site-held spare kit (fuses, connectors, signal cables, any approved ballast hardware), access to diagnostics or cloud alarms, charger spares or loaners, training for first-line checks, and a document pack (manuals, wiring, and test summaries as applicable). Lithium removes watering, but it does not remove connectors, chargers or BMS faults. Agree which parts the supplier stocks versus what you hold on the shelf, and name the on-call contact for each shift.

Service levels. Write hours-to-respond and hours-to-repair for critical trucks, including nights and weekends if you run those shifts. Name who isolates a faulty pack and who is allowed to open covers. Packs such as the 48V 420Ah-class, 80V 300Ah-class (about 26.21 kWh) and 24V 280Ah differ in weight and connectors—service tooling must match each voltage class.

Spare parts list. Typical consumables: main fuses or breakers of the specified rating, charge and discharge connectors and handles, communication jumper cables, display modules if field-replaceable, and mounting hardware. Ask Redway for a model-specific recommended spares list rather than inventing one. Keep one known-good charger of each voltage class; see planning charger power.

Diagnostics. Prefer packs with accessible alarm history via display, PC tool or 4G/cloud where offered. First-line staff should read SOC, temperature and fault codes before calling out an engineer; see monthly maintenance checklist. Capture screenshots for the work order.

Training. Operators need no-watering, no-equalise routines and alarm responses; technicians need connector care and isolation steps. Link training to commissioning records; see first-day commissioning.

Warranty boundary. Clarify what is covered (cells, BMS, workmanship) versus wear items (handles, rollers, external cables). Require serialised failure reports. Sample and test plans before bulk buy reduce early surprises; see sample order and test plan and warranty questions.

Stock policy. Hold connectors and fuses on site; hold a spare pack only if uptime maths justify it. For mixed 24V/48V/80V fleets, do not assume one spare covers all voltages. Manuals and UN38.3 summaries should be available on request and filed by serial number.

Review cadence. Quarterly review of call-outs, mean time to restore, and parts usage; update the kit when a new connector standard is introduced. Include charger firmware or profile changes in the same review so service and sales stay aligned.

Obtain a written recommended spares list per model and voltage before fleet rollout.

Verify before ordering: Recommended spare parts and field-replaceable units vary by model; confirm the list and SLA terms with Redway for the fleet configuration.
