Buyer question

An off-grid cabin uses rack batteries on a hybrid inverter and wants a portable generator to recharge after several cloudy days.

Main answer

Direct answer: Yes, most hybrid inverters can use a generator on the AC input or generator input to both power loads and charge the battery, provided the generator is stable enough for the inverter and charge current is limited to what the generator and the lithium bank allow. Set generator input current limits, battery charge current limits and the correct LiFePO4 voltage or closed-loop BMS profile. Size the generator for house load plus charge power, not for charge power alone.

Signal path. The generator feeds the inverter; the inverter rectifies and charges modules such as the 51.2V 200Ah 5U, 51.2V 150Ah 4U or an all-in-one like PowerAll. The battery should be linked by CAN or RS485 when the inverter supports closed-loop control; see connecting PM-LV racks to hybrid inverters.

Settings that matter. Generator maximum input current or power; battery maximum charge current; charge voltage limits if in voltage mode; frequency and voltage acceptance windows; and whether the inverter should pass AC through to loads while charging. Start with conservative charge current and raise it only if frequency stays stable.

Sizing. If the cabin draws 1.5 kW and you want 2 kW of charging, the generator must comfortably support about 3.5 kW plus inefficiency and surge. Undersized generators bog down, which can make hybrid inverters drop the AC source repeatedly.

Fuel and runtime. Lithium accepts charge whenever the inverter allows it; you do not need a lead-acid absorb ritual. Stop when SOC reaches your target to save fuel. Related charge-window thinking for LiFePO4 appears in LiFePO4 charger settings.

Quality of generator. Inverter-generators with clean output usually behave better than cheap open-frame units. If the hybrid inverter keeps rejecting the source, lower charge current or improve governing before blaming the battery.

Safety. Use outdoor generator placement, correct earthing practice for your jurisdiction, and outdoor-rated cables. Never run a generator in an enclosed plant room.

Monthly test. Start the generator into the inverter on a schedule, confirm charge current and that BMS communication remains online. Note any inverter warnings about frequency or voltage so you can retune limits before an emergency outage.

All-in-one note. PowerAll-style systems still need the same generator sizing discipline; follow the unit’s generator input limits in its manual. If the all-in-one shares one AC input for grid and generator, confirm transfer and grounding behaviour with the installer so neutral-earth arrangements stay correct for your region.

Limit generator input current and battery charge current first; raise them only after a stable test run.

Verify before ordering: Menu names and limits are inverter-specific; follow the hybrid inverter manual and Redway BMS communication guidance for your modules.
