How should a new lithium forklift battery be commissioned on the first day?

Talk / Battery Q&A
A warehouse receives its first two lithium forklift batteries on a Monday and wants both trucks back in service by the evening shift.
Direct answer: Plan the day in six steps: inspect and check the battery on arrival, install and secure it with the right lifting gear, adjust the truck’s battery settings, set up and verify the charger and communication, give it a first full charge, then run a loaded functional test and record baseline readings. Have the truck dealer and battery supplier agree who does each step beforehand.
1. Arrival checks. Inspect the crate and battery for damage, compare serial numbers and connector type with the order, and read the display or monitoring for voltage, state of charge and alarms. Lithium batteries normally arrive part-charged. See receiving heavy battery shipments.
2. Installation. Use lifting points and equipment rated for the weight: the 36V 250Ah (38.4V 240Ah) lists about 250 kg at 870 × 400 × 430 mm; the 48V 300Ah about 164 kg; the 80V 400Ah about 280 kg. Fit any spacers or ballast the truck maker requires to keep minimum battery weight, secure the battery, and connect with the power switch off.
3. Truck settings. Lithium voltage behaves differently from lead-acid, so the truck’s battery discharge indicator and lift cut-out need lithium settings or a signal from the BMS. Regenerative braking limits may also need review. These are truck-controller changes for the dealer; see discharge indicators and lift cut-out.
4. Charger. Confirm the charger’s voltage, current and lithium profile, and that communication with the BMS works if required. The 48V 300Ah lists 150A, the 36V 250Ah 120A and the 80V 400Ah 200A maximum continuous charge; set charger current at or below these.
5. First charge. Charge to full and let the charger finish so cells can balance. Note the charge time, end voltage and any warnings.
6. Functional test and baseline. Lift a typical heavy load to full height, travel, use ramps, and run for a while. Then record cell voltage spread, temperatures, state of charge and alarm history from the display or the PC/cloud monitoring Redway lists for these models. These are your baseline values for later checks.
Handover. Brief operators on charging routine and alarms (no watering, no equalising) and give maintenance staff the documents; see training operators for lithium.
If anything fails. Keep the truck out of service, keep the battery isolated, and contact the supplier with the data recorded.
↳ Replying to Redway Battery Editorial Team
Write the six steps into the order as the supplier’s commissioning scope, with named responsibilities for the truck dealer.
↳ Replying to Procurement perspective
Verify battery weight against the truck’s data plate minimum and confirm BDI and lift cut-out settings before releasing the truck.
↳ Replying to Selection/Engineering perspective
Save the day-one baseline report; it is the reference for monthly checks and warranty claims.

Verify before ordering: Truck parameter changes must follow the truck maker; charger profiles and BMS settings must come from Redway for the model delivered.
