Buyer question

A small business owner sees a percentage, a second percentage and occasional warning codes on a rack battery’s display and asks what each one means.

Main answer

Direct answer: State of charge (SOC) is the BMS’s estimate of how full the battery is now. State of health (SOH) is its estimate of remaining capacity compared with new. Both are estimates calculated from current, voltage and temperature, so they drift and need occasional full charges to stay accurate. Alarms and protection codes mean a limit was reached; look them up in the manual and log them, rather than reading them as a battery failure.

What the products list. The PM-LV48100-3U-PRO and PM-LV51100-3U-PRO list an LCD screen and RS485, RS232 and CAN-bus; the PM-LV51200-5U lists an LCD display, RS485 and CAN bus, with Bluetooth, app, SNMP and PC monitoring software as options. The pages do not list exactly which readings or codes appear, so check the manual for your model.

SOC. The BMS counts current in and out and corrects with voltage near full and empty. On LiFePO4’s flat voltage curve, the estimate can drift if the battery is rarely fully charged. A full charge to the charge limit usually lets the BMS resynchronise. If the inverter shows a different SOC from the battery, check which device the inverter uses as its source; see battery-to-inverter communication.

SOH. SOH reflects estimated capacity loss with age and cycles. A slowly falling SOH is normal. A sudden drop, or a big difference between modules in one bank, is worth reporting to the supplier with the readings.

Alarms and protection. Warnings usually come before protection: for example high or low cell voltage, high current, or temperature. Protection means the BMS limited or stopped charge or discharge. Write down the code, time, SOC and what the system was doing, check the manual, and contact the supplier if it repeats.

Logging routine. Record SOC, SOH, voltage, temperature and alarm history monthly, plus module-by-module readings in a bank. Monitoring software makes this easier but is optional on some models. For a fuller yearly routine, see annual inspection of a rack battery installation.

Read the bank, not just one module. In a parallel bank, compare SOC, voltage and temperature across modules. Small differences are normal; a module that is always much higher or lower than the others, or that alarms on its own, should be checked before it affects the rest of the bank.

Monitoring options such as SNMP or PC software can lower service cost by catching problems remotely; price them per site.

SOC and SOH are BMS estimates. Expect drift on a flat LiFePO4 curve, resync with full charges and compare modules within a bank.

Verify before ordering: Display contents, alarm codes and SOC/SOH calculation methods are not detailed on the product pages; request the manual from Redway for the exact model and firmware.
